Fifteen professors from Nanjing University (NJU) attended the 2012 American Physical Society (APS) March Meeting held in Boston. These professors were mostly from the School of Physics, showing the strength in the physics field of this prestigious university. This year, NJU will celebrate its 110-year anniversary from the date it was founded when the last emperor of China’s Qing Dynasty was still in power.

The National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures (NLSSM) held a reception banquet in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, on Feb 28th, with assistance from the Nanjing University Alumni Association (NUAA) of the greater Boston area. The professors from Nanjing University as well as over 200 alumni were present. The reception began with a speech by the chairman of NUAA Jiali Gong.

The NLSSM of Nanjing University was established in 1984, which is affiliated with the School of Physics. The director, Doctor Mu Wang, gave a brief introduction about the laboratory. It has a staff of 8 fellows from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, over 40 full professors, 15 associate professors, as well as a large number of post-doctors and students. Many major academic
achievements and breakthroughs have been made since the lab was founded.

The dean of Kuang Yaming Honors School, Wei Wang, and Professor Yanfeng Chen from the School of Modern Engineering and Applied Sciences delivered speeches on the personnel recruitment in these two affiliations, respectively. The “1000 Plan” is now in full swing, and its full name is “Recruitment of Global Young Experts”, which was launched in 2010 by the Organization Department of the Central Committee. At the moment, both the School of Physics and the School of Modern Engineering and Applied Sciences are with eager anticipation for the participation of young scholars.

Dean Wei Wang stated that Nanjing University provides a number of favorable policies to the outstanding scholars that return from abroad. These policies include a lump sum housing grant of 500,000 RMB, as well as an initial research funding of up to 5,000,000 RMB, etc.

It was reported that NJU has 32 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and Engineering, 20 selected candidates of the plan of “Recruitment of Global Experts”, 89 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund Award, 10 excellent teams of innovation of the National Science Foundation, 11 excellent teams of innovation of Ministry of Education, 20 discipline consultation committee members of Academic Degrees Committee under the State Council, seven “973” leading scientists, nine Chief Scientists in the “National Key Basic Research and Development Program”, 15 chief leaders of the national major special projects, 17 Young and Middle-aged Experts with Distinguished Contributions in Science, Technology and Management, nine National distinguished Teachers, 162 Scholars in the “New Century Outstanding Talents Supporting Project” of the Ministry of Education.

Nanjing University dates from 1902 when it was known as Sanjiang Normal School, and the name was changed to National Central University in May 1928. In 1949 it was renamed Nanjing University. Due to the nationwide restructuring of colleges and universities in 1952, it merged with the University of Nanking and became a liberal arts university. This year marks the 110th anniversary. Since the restoration of the college entrance exam in 1977, NJU has stepped into the new period of development. 6 of the NJU undergraduate program graduates were elected as the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and Engineering, and it makes NJU rank first in the country. 121 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund Award during 1994 and 2010 are the NJU undergraduate program graduates. Nanjing University has become a spectacular “talent highland”.
