Boston, Jan 10, 2015, — East Meets Words is the longest running Asian American / Pacific Islander open mic series in New England, hosted by Boston Progress, an API* arts and activist collective. The latest installament was held Friday evening at EMW Bookstore in Cambridge.

KAI HUANG is a spoken word poet, a disgruntled fourth-year student at Harvard Medical School, and the current blogmaster at EMW. He has slammed for Providence at National Poetry Slam (NPS) and Brown University at College Unions Poetry Slam International (CUPSI). He believes in love, minimalism, and playing Sam Cooke at loud volumes in residential areas from a water bottle shaped speaker attached to his bicycle. Crash is his least favorite film of all time.
East Meets Words strives to create a safer space and a platform for artists and non-artists to perform work of all stages. Everyone is welcome to attend and sign up on the open mic. The space is especially appreciative of work that challenges stereotypes and amplifies marginalized voices – prioritizing API performers. Time is set aside at each open mic for community announcements, meant to raise awareness about social justice issues in the greater Boston area.
