Salt Lake City, July 25, 2015, — This coming September marks 70 years since the end of World War II. In commemoration of this anniversary, Salt Lake City Public Library will host China During WWII film exhibition at the main library auditorium. China is a key alley of the US during WWII in the Pacific arena.

Film: The Inn of the Sixth Happiness
All her life Englishwoman Gladys Aylward knew that China was the place where she belonged. Not qualified to be sent there as a missionary, Gladys works as a domestic to earn the money to send herself to a poor, remote village. There she eventually lives a full and happy life: running the inn, acting as “foot inspector”, advising the local Mandarin and even winning the heart of mixed race Captain Lin Nan. But Gladys discovers her real destiny when the country is invaded by Japan and the Chinese children need her to save their lives. Based on a true story.

Nanking
This documentary chronicles the events in the Chinese capital city of Nanking following the Japanese invasion of 1937. Combining archival footage with interviews and cinematic recreations of historic events, the film follows German businessman John Rabe, surgeon Bob Wilson, and American missionary Minnie Vautrin as they sacrifice their own safety to protect Chinese refugees from the marauding Japanese army.

The Battle of China
This 1944 film is an installment of director Frank Capra’s “Why We Fight” propaganda series during World War II. In the film, Chinese culture and history are explored, as are the reasons why Japan seeks to conquer the country. Depicting numerous atrocities inflicted upon the Chinese people, the film brings to light the need for U.S. involvement in the war effort. Capra also captures the determined will and spirit of those already fighting for freedom.
