Dr. Michael Davidson — Victim of Senseless Violence

Medford, Mass., Jan. 21, 2015, — What kind of world that we are getting into now that the cardiac surgeon Michael Davidson, 44, from Wellesley, was shot in Brigham and Women’s Hospital by a crazy man? As a mother of a doctor, I’m horrified.

The victim was the shooter’s mother’s doctor and she had died November 15, 2014. He went to the hospital in the morning, specifically asking the doctor’s name, gave him two shots in the operating room while he was working-then killed himself afterwards with his own bullet in the head.

Dr. Michael Davidson was with Brigham and women’s since 2006, also an assistant professor at Harvard medical school. He graduated from Yale Medical School in 1996. Before that, he was with Duke University. His wife is a plastic surgeon, with three children and pregnant with one on the way.

I was especially very sad about this incident, as my son Patrick is a trauma surgeon at Bay State medical for many years in Springfield. The doctors are working so hard, day and night, to save people’s life and make people healthy and yet Dr. Davidson met such a tragic ending.

Such senseless act should never have happened at a world-class hospital in a world-class city. May God bless Dr. Davidson’s family and all medical personnel who have served our communities with dedication and professionalism.

Mayor Walsh of Boston must have felt the same way as I do. He released the following statement this morning.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Michael Davidson. This tragedy is the result of a senseless act of violence that has no place in our City. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his colleagues at Brigham and Women’s Hospital during this difficult time.”
