Lexington, Mass, May 31, 2014, –In the evening of May 27, Lexington High School (LHS) student J gave a lecture titled “Preparing for College” at Cary Library to dozens students and parents.
In the lecture, J went through courses she took during each year at LHS, and gave suggestions on how to get good grades on the courses. She also talked about preparations needed for college application. “Apply early will improve your chance of being accepted to Ivy League schools,” J stressed.
J is a senior at Lexington High School in Lexington, Mass., where she is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named an AP Scholar with Honor. She has won many awards in her high school career, and will attend Harvard University this Fall. Dr. John, father of J, is very proud of his daughter, and hopes J’s story can inspire other girls to excel in math.
J completed Eight AP courses: Economics, French, US History, World History, Calculus BC, Biology with high honors. She was recognized exemplary college level achievement in AP program exams.
Besides taking challenging AP courses, J. also did a lot of volunteer work. She taught middle school level math at a summer program for Lexington Youth Center for Asian Learning in 2013, taught middle school level math at a summer program at LHS from 2011, and volunteered for International Night, Spring Fling, music concerts and Pan-Mass Challenge and other local events. J was also a peer tutor in French, math, chemistry for National Honors Society Tutor from 2012 to 2013.
In recognition of J’s academic achievements and service to community, Governor Deval Patrick and Mass. House Speaker Robert DeLeo have issued citations. Governor Patrick congratulated J for being named to a US Presidential Scholar program semi-finalist. Speaker DeLeo and State Rep. Jay Kaufman recognized J’s “exemplary performance in modeling the values of character, leadership and achievement at Lexington High School.”
Besides her academic accompaniments, J is also a Championship figure skater. Her team Haydenettes won the gold medal at the 2014 US Synchronized Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., and her team Lexettes won bronze medal at the 2013 US Synchronized Skating Championships in Plymouth, Michigan. In March 2014, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) selected J as a winner of the National Merit $2500 Scholarship.
J’s other accolades include recognition in French, chemistry and music. J skates out of the Hayden Recreation Centre Figure Skating Club. Off the ice, J teaches math classes at the Lexington Youth Center for Asian Learning, supports elementary school drug prevention and participates in benefits supporting breast and ovarian cancer research.
