Empow Studios Launches STEM-Enriched Fall Classes and After-School Program

Lexington, Mass., August 25, 2014 , — Empow Studios recently released a full calendar of fall classes, including seven new classes: Minecraft Animation, Website Design, 3D Modeling and Printing, App Design, Digital Music Production, LEGO Animation, and Game Design with Unity.  There are also two kid-tested favorites: Game Design with Gamemaker and LEGO Robotics.

Empow Studios students work on solar-powered cars.

The App Design for Droid Devices class features MIT’s App Inventor. Students will learn to program an app from start to finish. Tablets will be provided or students can bring their own. No previous programming experience is required. It runs from September 27 – November 15, from 10:00 am – 11:00 am on Saturdays for students Grades 4+. The tuition is $160, and FREE for After-School Club Members.

Playing video games is fun, but playing games you make yourself is a thrill! In the Video Game Design with Gamemaker class, Kids learn to create character sprites, design levels, and program game mechanics while they learn the fundamentals of object oriented programming. All students work at their own pace, making this a great workshop for both new and more experienced game makers. Don’t tell the kids, but while creating the games and learning programming, they will also be learning math, geometry, design and logic. Games can be played at home (MS Windows-only), and software used in class is available for free download (MAC and PC) for those who want to continue their game-making skills at home.

After-School Club

Empow Studios After-School Club is an after-school program where students can explore, build, design, program, and generally apply their creative side using powerful technical tools. Our goal is to create a safe environment where kids can learn to confidently navigate and make sense of a world that is increasingly technological. The instructors start with activities that are irresistibly fun, and structure them in a way that teaches critical thinking, design process, collaboration, and communication. The instructors teach 3-dimensional geometry concepts through video game design, creative writing through animation, and engineering through robotics. The studio approach learning with whimsy and play, making complex topics approachable and un-intimidating. Students will also have opportunities for teamwork, leadership, mentoring, and making new friendships based on shared interests. And, of course, homework will get done every day with our support – if you so choose.

Club members will have access to all of the robust tools and resources at the Studio, and the support they need in learning how to use them. Even better, ANY class at the studio is free for members. More details can be found here: empow.me/club.
