By Chinese Historical Society of New England
Boston, May 30, 2018, — Welcome to the Chinese American Experiences Mass. Memories Road Show on June 2 at Pao Arts Center in Boston Chinatown. This May, Chinese Historical Society of New England (CHSNE) is celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Preservation Month, and we are pleased to collaborate with the Archives & Special Collections Department at UMASS Boston to empower community members to become local preservationists.
We hope this event inspires intergenerational conversations about family history and community stories, and that you begin thinking about how to best preserve and pass on your family’s legacy. To that extent, we have included a brief guide to resources in this booklet, and encourage you to stop by our Local History Station.
Thank you to partner organizations–Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association, Greater Malden Asian American Community Coalition, Pao Arts Center/Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, and Quincy Asian Resources Inc.; the dedicated members of the Planning Committee; the many volunteers; and you–the members of our community, for sharing your stories and reminding us of the plurality of Chinese American experiences throughout New England, and the support in building new bridges.
Whether you have been a long-time member or are new, CHSNE supports you in your journey and hopes to see you at future events.
The Mass. Memories Road Show is a statewide digital history project that documents people, places and events in Massachusetts history through family photographs and stories. In partnership with teams of local volunteers, we organize public events to scan family and community photographs and videotape “the stories behind the photos.” The images and videos are indexed and incorporated into an online educational database at openarchives.umb.edu. Since its launch, the project has gathered more than 10,000 photographs and stories from across the state. It is supported in part by the Patricia C. Flaherty ’81 Endowed Fund at UMass Boston.
Please join us in 2018 at our next event in Winchester, The Jenks Center, on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
