MERRIMACK, N.H. — Two Massachusetts women are in a New Hampshire jail following a theft and altercation with police at the Merrimack Premium Outlets on Saturday afternoon, police said.
Police say Maryah Williams, 23, of Boston and Lasonia Watler, 18, of Brockton are scheduled to appear in Merrimack District Court on Monday.
Merrimack police say they responded to a report of a theft in progress at the Polo Ralph Lauren factory outlet store around 3:45 p.m. Police said the suspects, later identified as Williams and Watler, were found inside the nearby American Eagle Outlet.
Police say as officers approached them, one suspect began emptying her shopping bags in an attempt to hide the stolen items. Police say both women resisted arrest.
Merrimack police say Williams kicked an officer in the stomach and used pepper spray, affecting the officers and customers in the store. Police say Watler was stopped before attempting to use her own pepper spray.
Williams faces felony charges of receiving stolen property, attempted second-degree assault and falsifying physical evidence, along with several misdemeanor charges, including simple assault on a police officer.
Watler is facing felony charges of receiving stolen property and multiple misdemeanors, including resisting arrest and attempted simple assault on a police officer.
Both were transported to the Merrimack Police Department where they were processed and held on preventive detention.
Both officers were evaluated and treated by Merrimack Fire and EMS, and other patrons of the store who were exposed to the pepper spray refused medical treatment, police said.
