Boston, Oct. 22, 2013, — Mayor Thomas M. Menino joined leaders from the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Police Department, and City officials to encourage fans to support the Red Sox as they kick off the World Series tomorrow against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Boston is the greatest sports city in America, and we are tremendously lucky and grateful to get to watch the Red Sox challenge for their third title in 10 years,” Mayor Menino said. “I encourage everyone to be responsible fans and respect one another and your surroundings while you support the team. Baseball should be a fun, safe experience for everyone, everywhere, especially when it’s the World Series.” |
Mayor Menino also encouraged Bostonians to wear Red Sox gear throughout the day on game days during the Series.
The Boston Police Department will be in attendance tomorrow to discuss plans for extra officers on hand for game nights and enforcement of underage and public drinking violations. BPD will also detail plans for street closures during games.
Approximately 200 restaurants, bars, and other businesses in the area of Allston/Brighton, Fenway, Back Bay, the South End, and Downtown, have received detailed instructions from the Mayor’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing on new directives in place for all games, home or away, that can result in the Red Sox clinching the World Series. Directives include dispersing lines once premises have reached capacity, preventing crowds from gathering to watch televisions from the street, and clearing the outside areas of establishments by the end of the fifth inning.
The City’s Traffic Management Center, Emergency Operations Center, and Unified Command Center will be operating during home and potential clinching games.
Friendly Wager Between Malden Mass. and Malden, Missouri
Mayor Gary Christenson of Malden Mass. and Mayor Ray Santie of Malden, Missouri have placed a friendly wager on the outcome of the 2013 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals. If the Red Sox win, Mayor Santie will deliver Missouri’s native grown rice and purple hull peas to Mayor Christenson’s office. If the Cardinals win, Mayor Christenson will send Mayor Santie’s office an assortment of Malden’s own New England Coffee. Also, the Mayor of the city that loses will have to wear the winning team’s jersey to work the day after the final game of the World Series.
“I look forward to sampling some native Missouri fare!” said Mayor Christenson.
