Boston, Feb. 16, 2021, — Chinese American Citizens Alliance Boston (C.A.C.A. Boston), the Chinese American Heritage Foundation (CAHF) and Chung Wah Academy of New England (Chung Wah) will kick off the 1st Greater Boston Lunar New Year Rolling Parade on Sunday, February 21, 2021. Rain/snow day will be Sunday, February 28, 2021. The participates will assemble at 11:00 along Surface Road (Rose Kennedy Greenway) starting in front of the Lion Gateway in Boston’s Chinatown.
The Parade Marshall will be the Honorable Seaman First Class Tony Moy of the U.S. Navy. Veteran Moy is a Chinese American World War II Veteran who was honored by U.S. Congress on December 9. 2020 and presented with the Congressional Gold Medal. Veteran Moy and the rolling parade will be escorted by Massachusetts State Police and joined by elected officials, Asian American community and business leaders.
The Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar traditional to many East Asian countries including China, South Korea, and Vietnam, which are regulated by the cycles of the moon and sun. This Lunar New Year is the Year of the White Metal Ox and we are excited as it’s really a time for new beginnings and we trust the Year of the Ox will bring fortune, happiness, and health. We ask the community to participate, come to your windows, doorway or sidewalk maintaining social distancing and wearing red. To attract luck, you have to wear red.
The parade begin at 12 noon and will proceed through the streets of Chinatown. The parade will pass by Boston City Hall, Massachusetts State House, Malden City Hall, Somerville City Hall, Cambridge City Hall, Brookline City Hall, and Quincy City Hall. The parade will pass the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Police Station Area A, Boston Fire Station on High Street, Tufts Medical Center, South Cove Community Health Center Boston, Boston Medical Center,
Longwood Medical Area, Boston Police Headquarters, the Korean American business area along Harvard Street in Allston, the Vietnamese American Community Center in Dorchester, the South Cove Health Center Quincy and end at Kam Man Plaza in Quincy.
The organizers to thank our first responders and essential workers have invited the God of Fortune (played by Mr. Hung Goon) to deliver a large box of fortune cookies and a case of oranges to hospitals, health centers, police and fire stations on the route. Helium balloons, American flags, fresh pastries, bottle water and hot beverages will be provided for participants, Kam Man Supermarket will present a Chinese New Year lucky gift bag to each participating vehicle.
C.A.C.A. Boston, CAHF and Chung Wah plan to make this an annual celebration to bring cultural enrichment to the community and Lunar New Year cheers to our neighbors around the Greater Boston area. Participants are encouraged to wear cultural attire to celebrate their family history, roots and embrace a more perfect union. Vehicles must be appropriately decorated.
