Mayor Thomas M. Menino today held the city’s annual First Night public safety press conference, encouraging people to come to Boston to ring in the New Year during the 38th Annual First Night celebration. Officials from the Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and the MBTA reminded revelers to celebrate the holiday safely and encouraged visitors to take advantage of public transportation when traveling through the city.

New York City, Sept. 30, 2013 –On Sept. 27, Sun Guoxiang, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in New York City, hosted a lunch reception in celebration of the 64th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. More than 450 people, including guests from government institutions, diplomatic corps and business sector, attended the event.

¿OISTE? PODER LATINO 2013 FUNDRAISER[Boston] On Thursday, September 12th from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm at the Artists for Humanity Epicenter, 100 West 2d Street, South Boston, the board and staff invite you to PODER LATINO 2013, a fundraiser to raise funds for ¿OISTE? the Latino Civic Education Initiative. We will be honoring Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino and the event will be co-hosted by Tom Ashbrook, host of WBUR’s On Point, and Jarrett Barrios, CEO of Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts.
¿Oíste? was founded in 1999 by several Latino activists from across the state who were concerned about the lack of Latino political representation and civic participation in Massachusetts. The mission is to advance the political, social and economic standing of Latinos and Latinas in the state. ¿Oíste? believes that civic education, leadership development and civic engagement are pathways to fostering individual and community empowerment. Its programs help Latinos and Latinas to critically and civically engage in the life of their community, and to change systems and structures that have historically barricaded their access to quality education, health care, housing and economic development. About Tech Goes Home:
With support from the city of Boston, Tech Goes Home is a national nonprofit program that has successfully provided more than 10,000 under-served residents the opportunity, tools, education and access required for 21st century skills development.TGH Small Business is a new initiative that aims to help micro-business owners use technology and online tools to Organize, Market, and Sell through 15 hours of FREE training from a trainer in the business’s community and the opportunity to purchase a new computer for a $50 copay. By the end of the program, participants will have a working knowledge of and confidence in a selection of hand-picked web tools that address common needs of micro-businesses.
Tech Goes Home is looking to partner with organizations that would be interested in adopting its FREE materials and course model. Tech Goes Home will train individuals from interested organizations, and support you throughout the duration of the course.

Obama Names Sixteen Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipients
WASHINGTON, August 9, 2013 – Today, President Barack Obama named sixteen recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. The awards will be presented at the White House later this year.
