    The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is at the forefront of identifying problems and finding new solutions for existing industries and infrastructures to make a big impact around the world. On Nov. 17, eight CEE students and researchers pitched business ideas to a panel of seasoned entrepreneurs at the second Innovation@ONE competition, offering solutions to problems at many scales, from public health to physical infrastructure.

    At Innovation@ONE, the Most Inventive Business Idea was presented to Jingjie Yeo (left) of Accuro Pressure Silk; the Business Pitch Champion was awarded to Justin Chen (center) of Motus View; and the Best Early Stage Idea was awarded to Paige Midstokke (right) of Safe Tap.   • Haier Products Assist MIT Professor in Cutting-edge Research

    Cambridge, Mass., Dec. 19, 2016, — The Pew Charitable Trust recently named its annual list “37 Scientists Who Could Change the World”, among which there’s a Boston-based scholar, Omer Yilmaz. He is a young associate professor at MIT, focusing on cancer research. Prof. Yilmaz became famous for his latest research that was published on the academic journal Nature. After repeated experiments, he found why obese people are faced with higher risks of cancers: the stem cells are stimulated and a kind of protein that controls metabolism is activated.

  • Breakthrough Prize to Mark 5th Anniversary in Award Ceremony on Dec. 4

    December 4, 2016 – (San Francisco) – The Breakthrough Prize and founders Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, tonight announced the recipients of the 2017 Breakthrough Prizes, marking the organization’s fifth anniversary recognizing top achievements in Life Sciences, Fundamental Physics and Mathematics. A combined total of $25 million was awarded at the gala ceremony in Silicon Valley, hosted by Morgan Freeman. Each of the Breakthrough Prizes is worth $3 million, the largest individual monetary prize in science.

  • Westlake Institute for Advanced Study Attracts International Talents

    Hangzhou, China, Dec. 10, 2016 — Westlake Institute for Advanced Study (WIAS) hosts its founding ceremony today in Hangzhou. WIAS is a non-profit research institute that is dedicated to the advancement of natural sciences and the frontiers of engineering disciplines. WIAS is located in the beautiful Cloud Town of Xihu District of Hangzhou.

    WIAS hosted the second academic interview on November 20, 2016 in Hangzhou, China. Twenty outstanding talents from United States of America, Germany, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan participated in this round of interviews. Through presentations and questions, WIAS judges evaluated the candidates’ independent thinking abilities as well as their dedication to academic studies to select the best talents.

  • To Broaden Global Reach, 2016 Tang Prize to Be Awarded on 9/25

    Taipei, Sept. 23, 2016, –After a successful inaugural year in 2014, the second biennial Tang Prize commenced this September 22 at Taipei’s iconic National Palace Museum. The six recipients of the international award were greeted by Tang Prize Founder Samuel Yin at the welcoming reception, along with leaders from industry and government. The reception was the first in a week-long series of events, including a culturally diverse concert, a lecture and forum series, and the centerpiece to the week—the Tang Prize Award Ceremony on September 25.

  • MIT’s Feng Zhang Wins Tang Prize in Biopharmaceutical Science

    Boston, June 20, 2016, — MIT News reported on June 18 that Feng Zhang, a core institute member of the Broad Institute and an investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT, has been named a 2016 Tang Prize Laureate in Biopharmaceutical Science for his role in developing the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing system and demonstrating pioneering uses in eukaryotic cells.
