Dong Wenhua and Me, A Performance to Remember
By Franke Presta, Northeastern University
My last performance at the NEU&MIT Spring Festival Gala went very well. After the event, I met with several people who were interested in why I was able to speak and sing in fluent Cantonese. This happens after most of my performances, so I didn’t think much of it. I answered their questions, posed for pictures, and gave out my business cards as I usually do.

Mary Sherman Explains the Art of Composing at BCPA
By Yaming Chi, Boston Chinese Photographers’ Association (BCPA)
“Have you ever seen people in museums looking at a picture like this?” Mary Sherman started her lecture to a group of amateur photographers in BCPA with a question. To make sure everyone followed what her ‘this’ meant, she went up to the blackboard, drew a rectangle, then placed her face less than 3 inches from it and slowly moved her head along the sides. For half a minute or so I heard absolute silence from the audience with, perhaps, few occasional giggles. Yes indeed I have as I recalled, but I had thought the person did so must have had a really bad eyesight – that was many years ago in the Art Institute of Chicago. But no, as she moved away from the board and explained. People were looking for (and look at) what connected different elements in a picture. It more or less could be thought of as the flow, or chi (氣) in Chinese Taoism philosophy, that’d be linked by colors, lines, shapes, textures and values in a pictorial artwork.

Chinese Dramas and the Need for Narrative Reinvention
By Alyza Liu, bostonese.com
In the waning months of 2013 and the waxing ones of 2014, the Korean television drama You Who Came from the Stars (also translated as My Love from the Star, Man from Another Star) made large waves in East and Southeast Asia. Its premise was offbeat – an alien who’s been living in relative anonymity on the Korean Peninsula for almost three centuries meets a Hallyu star – but its charm was undeniable, combining science fiction with romance and even police procedural. You Who Came from the Stars was one of the most popular South Korean dramas (colloquially known as ‘kdramas’) to have aired in China recently.

The Narrative of Modern China on Display at the Met
By Alyza Liu, bostonese.com
New York City, March 12, 2014, — When most people think of modern China, it’s not usually through the lens of its fine arts or innovative design; when most people think of Chinese art, it doesn’t tend to be through the lens of modernity. Those who are more politically aware might knew of Ai Weiwei, the artist and activist who achieved international fame through exhibits such as Sunflower Seeds and his work on the architecture of the Bird’s Nest Stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, or his 2011 arrest. Those culturally minded may know of Liu Bolin, dubbed ‘The Invisible Man,’ who recently gave a talk at the TED Conference.

This composite photograph named View of Tide was created by Yang Yongliang (born 1980) through Yang’s distinctive method of “painting” with digital photography. The seemingly harmonious traditional landscape, composed of countless high-rise apartments, power-line towers and construction cranes, becomes a subtle yet critical response to urbanization.
