After the first public concert at National Heritage Museum in Lexington, Mass. in December 2011, the Asian Cultural Center Greater Boston Asian-American Youth Symphony Orchestra (GBAAYSO) has been active in local communities. A number of charity concerts have been presented by GBAAYSO at senior centers and other venues in Lexington and Waltham, including a Food for Music concert in Lexington on April 15 that raised about $2,000 for Lexington Food Bank.

On June 16, GBAAYSO will present the Butterfly Lover concert at Lexington High School Auditorium at 7:30 PM. The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo (梁山伯) and Zhu Yingtai (祝英台), whose names form the title of the story. The title is often abbreviated to Liang Zhu (梁祝) and often regarded as the Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet.

According to Wikipedia, the story also inspired the production of Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto, or Liang Zhu Violin Concerto as known in Chinese, a work for violin and orchestra. It was composed by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao in 1958. The piece has been the most musically symbolic retelling of the legend; at 25 minutes and 40 seconds long, it is one of the classics of traditional Chinese music. According to conductor Jie Yang, GBAAYSO has been rehearsing this challenging piece for the past few months. “We hope the audience will enjoy this beautiful piece,” said Mr. Yang.

This concert will also feature guest conductor Mr. Chi-Sun Chan, who is the music director and conductor for Greater Boston Chinese Culture Association (GBCCA)’s Chinese Music Ensembles. This concert will feature solo performances including conductor and violinist Jie Yang and pianist Andrew Li. For ticket information, please visit: accusa.eventbrite.com.
