  • Reflections on an Active Retirement

    Four years ago, much to the surprise of my dean, I told him that I planned to retire in 2001 after 40 years on the faculty of Harvard University (Note added 2007. Currently in the US there is no mandatory retirement age for university professor. This has in fact becoming somewhat of a problem since many tenured faculty chooses to stay on rather than retire. Thus, they block openings and advancement for younger faculties). Since then I have prepared my self for this transition, reflected on my life, and finally gone through the experience. Collected below are some insights that I learned from others, discovered for myself, and emotions that I experienced before, during, and after the transition. They are offered as amusement, free advice (probably worth the same), and my own catharsis.

  • Winners of Talent Contest of New England Youths Compete for Grand Prize at Banquet of NAWA of Mass.

    Boston, July 5, 2013, –The Seventh Anniversary Celebrating Banquet of National Asian Women’s Association (NAWA) of Massachusetts was held at Quincy China Pearl Restaurant in the evening of June 30, 2013. About 300 guests attended this banquet, including state Rep. Tackey Chan and Hung Goon, a representative for Malden Mayor Gary Christensen. First place winners of the inaugural Talent Contest of New England Youths competed for $300 cash prize.

  • CCBA-NE Holds First-ever Art Show by Art Class Students

    Boston, July 3, 2013, — Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England (CCBA-NE) art class for children held an art show in the afternoon of June 29 at the meeting room of CCBA. The art show is a celebration of ending of the first-ever art class at CCBA-NE with about 40 students, their parents and CCBA-NE staff.

  • The 15th SAPA-NE Annual Conference Focuses on Scientific Innovation and Technological Entrepreneurship

    The 2013 annual conference of Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals Association New England (SAPA-NE) was successfully held on May 25 at MIT. The day-long event attracted close to 500 attendees. It started with lectures at the Wang Auditorium at the Sloan School, and ended with a banquet at the Walker Memorial Morse Hall just a few blocks away in MIT campus. Board members of SAPA-NE also shared a birthday cake to celebrate SAPA-NE’s 15th birthday at end of the banquet.

  • NAAAP Boston Awards Scholarships as Boston Marks One Month Anniversary of the Marathon Bombings

    Boston, May 16, 2013, — The National Association of Asian American Professionals Boston chapter (NAAAP Boston) awarded Dan Minh Chu, Tuan Ho and Kasey Shen of the 2013 NAAAP Boston Future Leader Award. The three exceptional students received a total of $15,000 of scholarships at NAAAP Boston’s Scholarship Gala on May 15 at Hilton Boston Back Bay. The event was coincided with the one month anniversary of Boston bombings that happened just blocks away from the hotel. CNN anchor Anderson Cooper was broadcasting live at the nearby Boston Bombing makeshift memorial when the award ceremony took place.

  • Q & A with Andrew Conning on China Education Policy

    Andrew Conning is a doctoral candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Graduate Student Associate of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. His research examines the structures of reasoning with which individuals across cultures make sense of international and interethnic issues. He is spending 2012-13 conducting research in China as a Fulbright scholar and Harvard Traveling Fellow.
