  • New Bostonians Summit: Immigrant Families’ Educational and Economic Success is Boston’s Future

    The New Bostonioan Summit was held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 8:00 AM at City Year’s Lavine Civic Forum. The half-day summit focused on top issues facing Boston’s immigrants. About 250 Boston’s immigrants and representatives from several sectors attended the Summit The half-day summit provided an update on the New Bostonians Agenda, a collective response to three of the biggest issues facing Boston’s immigrants: educational attainment for their children (K-12 Education); English language acquisition (ESOL); and economic success through family-sustaining jobs.

  • USCIS To Host Chinese-Language “Jiao Liu” Engagement on October 18

    BOSTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will host a free information session of our “Jiao Liu” series on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. (EDT). The topic will be “Petitioning for an Immediate Relative.” This national session will be exclusively in Chinese and available for the public to participate via Internet or toll-free telephone.

  • Never to Be Forgotten – Lost Years Documents Struggles of Early Chinese Immigrants

    On August 12, Lost Years won the Best Documentary Award at 2012 Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF). In the afternoon of the same day, in a large classroom of Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston Chinatown, the film premiered in Boston in front of an audience of 200, some of whom had tears in their eyes while watching the scenes of inhumane and injustice treatments of Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s in North America, New Zealand and Australia.

  • Save the Date October 9, 2012 – New Bostonians Summit

    The New Bostonians Summit Initiative is a multi-year, city-wide process initiated by Mayor’s Office of New Bostonians (MONB) in 2006 to address the three most pressing issues to immigrants in Boston – ESOL, K-12 Education and Jobs – identified from a survey with the diverse communities. It is an inclusive approach that brings together key stakeholders from 7 sectors to help develop, agree upon and invest in a systematic process for addressing issues. The 7 sectors included representatives from Boston’s immigrant, mainstream advocacy, business, philanthropy, labor, higher education and government communities.

  • Office of New Bostonians: What Deferred Action Means for Young Immigrants

    There is a lot of excitement and questions about the recently announced Deferred Action for young immigrants. Community partners have shared with us that they have received many calls and have also been made aware of several scam activities where people have been offered assistance to file for Deferred Action for several thousand dollars.
