The EAC invites you to a community meeting Monday, February 4 at 6:00pm at Orchard Gardens K-8 School, 906 Albany St., Roxbury.

Mayor Menino and thousands of parents have asked us to create a more predictable and fair school choice system. The External Advisory Committee on School Choice is looking at final proposals this month and we want to know what you think.
Superintendent Johnson, the Boston School Committee and our great teachers and school leaders are also continuing to improve school quality for all students and we need input from parents, students and the community to be successful.

Help spread the word about this important meeting Wednesday February 6th at 6:00 PM in the East Boston High School. Learn about Global Oil’s proposal to bring 1.8 million gallons of ethanol every week to their facility on the Chelsea Creek, and hear from representatives of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation about a study of the public safety risks. Ethanol is a highly flammable liquid, which if ignited requires special foams and equipment to extinguish. A fire from an ethanol train that derailed in Ohio last summer required an evacuation of residents within a one-mile radius of the accident, and the flames took nearly two days to put out. Does this kind of facility belong in our dense, urban community? Come learn more about Global’s plans, and let the Department of Transportation know your concerns.

Massachusetts Families, Community Leaders Announce Plans to Win Comprehensive Immigration Reform in 2013
Press conference features families hurt by current immigration system, announces actions to come
BOSTON – At 11 a.m. on Monday at Boston City Hall, leaders from labor, faith, and government will join with the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, community allies, and immigrant families impacted by the failed immigration system to announce “Keeping Families Together,” a new national campaign to pass sensible and humane immigration reform in 2013. The campaign seeks to support and strengthen the proposals released this week by a bipartisan group of 8 U.S. Senators and by President Obama, to ensure that reform is centered around  a pathway to citizenship that keeps families together.
The families in this campaign will lift the veil on the moral crisis of family separation through a series of events to be announced Monday, escalating to a national mobilization in Washington, DC in April, organized locally by CASA de Maryland and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
WHAT:  Massachusetts launch of the Keeping Families Together campaign and announcement of its role in the national grassroots mobilization for comprehensive, common sense immigration reform.

Description
Responsible for the administration and development of the literacy programs of Literacy Unlimited and for implementation of the policies and objectives of the Advisory Board. Frequent contact with volunteers, students and the public requires the exercise of tact and diplomacy.

Organizational Scope:
Works under the direction of the Director of Libraries.

Major Responsibilities:
Coordinates all activities of Literacy Unlimited and directs the staff in its work. Prepares and manages the program’s budget. Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates staff, including the Office Manager, Assistant Office Manager and Tutor Trainers. Serves as liaison between the program, Framingham Public Library, Friends of Literacy Unlimited, the Literacy Unlimited Advisory Board, Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts and community organizations and agencies. Maintains program records, computerized and non-computerized, and prepares written reports as required. Oversees the acquisition and utilization of resource materials. Directs public relations efforts and serves as primary spokesperson for Literacy Unlimited. Develops program funding sources, including grant writing and grant management. Assesses and evaluates community needs and resources and develops new programs within the scope of the program’s mission as needed.

Job Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree from a degree-granting institution plus two years relevant experience with adult education, adult literacy , ESOL, or other non-profit groups or an Associate’s Degree and four years related experience are required. An advanced degree or certificate in Reading, ESOL, or Adult Basic Education or related discipline may substitute for a year of experience, Ability to use word processing, email, spreadsheet, and database required. Excellent oral and written English skills are required. Conversational skills in a foreign language are desirable, particularly in Spanish or Portuguese.

Knowledge, Ability & Physical Requirements:
Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous tools and office equipment relative to this position which shall include, but may not be limited to: computers, copiers, fax machines, and calculators. Time spent standing, walking, and sitting. Lifting, pushing/pulling, or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds with occasionally a maximum of 30 pounds. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, bending, and squatting. Repetitive movements of the hands.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Office of Citizenship will hold a teacher training opportunity in Boston on Thursday, 2/14/13. The event will be held at the John F. Kennedy Federal Building, from 9:30am to 4:14pm.

The seminar is a free civics-based training for adult educators, program directors, volunteers, and representatives from immigrant-serving organizations. Sessions include information on the naturalization process and test as well as on teaching strategies and objectives to prepare immigrants for the naturalization interview and test. Participants will have the opportunity to speak with local USCIS representatives, as well as receive free resources for use in their organizations.

GENERAL SUMMARY
Centro Latino, Inc. is a non-profit community organization, incorporated in 1989 to address the human service and community development needs of the area’s growing Latino population. Its mission is to “improve the quality of life and promote the self-determination of Latinos in Chelsea and Greater Boston through health, education, economic development, and social well-being strategies.” Centro Latino currently operates a diverse menu of services in five primary program areas: Adult Basic Education & Literacy, Computer Technology, Community Health, Immigration & Citizenship, Youth & Families.

OVERVIEW OF POSITION
The Spanish GED Instructor provides group instruction to adult learners. Instructors are required to align their syllabus with the Mass. Department of Secondary and Elementary Education’s ABE Curriculum Frameworks. A copy of the relevant framework(s) will be provided by the ABE Program Site Director.  Instructional methods must reflect a student-centered learning, balanced literacy philosophy. These methods include varying and individualizing lesson plans to accommodate different learning styles.  In addition, maintaining an authentic literacy environment when possible and ongoing assessment

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Design lesson plans based on the Massachusetts Frameworks for Adult Basic Education and the Program Curriculum Guidelines
Collaborate with the student advisor to assist students develop their goals
Develop appropriate materials for class use; review, update and share materials to maintain relevance.
Submit a class syllabus every term to the ABE Program Site Director
Submit lesson plans to the ABE Program Site Director bi-monthly.
Monitor and submit class attendance records to ABE Program Site Director for every class
Administer and maintain records of class assessments in students’ portfolios.
When needed, refer students to advising.
Attend instruction planning activities and meetings with the program director

REQUIREMENTS:
Fluent in Spanish
Bachelor’s Degree.
Knowledge of adult
learning theory
principles of GED instruction
balanced literacy approaches to reading and writing
contextualized learning strategies
authentic and ongoing classroom assessment
At least 2 years experience working and teaching adult learners and diverse populations.

English for New Bostonians (ENB) is seeking a professional in adult ESOL to design and implement a 12-15 hour volunteer training to commence in late January.  The training will prepare volunteers to work with students enrolled in ESOL programs across the city, assisting them to improve their English and literacy skills, attain their citizenship, and fully integrate into local schools, workplaces, communities and civic institutions.
Once trained, volunteers will be placed at participating community based locations as one-on-one tutors in speaking, reading, writing and U.S. civics; conversation circle leaders; or ESOL/ABE classroom assistants. Volunteers will support either traditional or distance learning classes, and will assist students who are diverse in their educational and linguistic backgrounds, and goals.
We anticipate spreading the training over 3 sessions, exact dates and times to be determined.

The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc.

The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) located in Malden, MA is seeking a permanent three-day per week Project Coordinator for the ILC Public Education Institute.  The mission of the Institute is to educate the public about the positive impact that immigrants have on the country, the economy and our communities.  The mission is carried out through disseminating research and promoting immigrants’ economic and social contributions as entrepreneurs, workers and consumers. The Institute also provides free, nationally available online workshops for educators and immigrant-serving individuals and organizations about immigrants and immigration. Events are held periodically to celebrate contributions of immigrants and raise funds for the Institute.

The Project Coordinator will work with the Institute team and support all its logistical and administrative operations.  The coordinator will also assist the Director and other staff members in implementing the online education programs as well as special events.

Specific tasks will include: 1) Coordination of promotion, logistics and administrative needs for online workshops; 2) administrative support to the Director and Assistant Director for conferences and presentations to promote research and other information; 3) assistance in preparations for special events promoting The ILC’s work and immigrant entrepreneurs; 4) maintenance of the Public Education Institute database and records.

Qualifications:
Education: Bachelors degree preferred but not required
Strong computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Mail Merge, Labels and Nametags tools. Basic knowledge of Publisher in order to create signs, tent cards etc.
Familiarity with Constant Contact, especially with contact management and reports, as well as Facebook and other social media

Salary:

Given the impact Hurricane Sandy has had on regions where Haitians reside, the re-registration period is extended through Jan. 29, 2013.
Haitian TPS beneficiaries are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Under this extension, USCIS also will accept applications from eligible individuals who have already applied after the close of the re-registration period on Nov. 30, 2012 and will continue to accept applications through Jan. 29, 2013.
The initial, 60-day re-registration period was established after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced in October 2012 an 18-month extension of the TPS designation of Haiti, from Jan. 23, 2013, through July 22, 2014.

Approximately 60,000 Haitian nationals (and people having no nationality who last habitually resided in Haiti) are eligible for TPS re-registration. TPS is not available to Haitian nationals who entered the United States after Jan. 12, 2011.

In the Oct. 1, 2012 Federal Register notice announcing the extension of TPS for Haiti (see 77 FR 59943), DHS also automatically extended—by six months, through July 22, 2013—the validity of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for eligible Haitian TPS beneficiaries. This will allow sufficient time for eligible TPS beneficiaries whose re-registration is timely to receive an EAD without any lapse in employment authorization.

To re-register, TPS beneficiaries must submit Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status, and Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. Individuals seeking to re-register do not need to pay the Form I-821 application fee. However, a biometric services fee (or a fee-waiver request) is required for all re-registrants 14 years of age and older. All re-registrants seeking employment authorization through July 22, 2014, must submit the Form I-765 fee (or a fee-waiver request). Re-registrants who do not want employment authorization are not required to submit the I-765 fee but must still submit a completed Form I-765. Failure to submit the required filing fees or a properly documented fee-waiver request will result in the rejection of the re-registration application.

Catholic Charities’ El Centro del Cardenal program in Jamaica Plain seeks a part-time (5 hours/week) Employment Counselor/Coach to support adult learners in its Prevocational ESOL class funded by English for New Bostonians.  Classes meet Monday-Thursday from 9-12 at our Jamaica Plain location.  Counseling/Coaching time arranged with adult learners during the week.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Scheduling weekly appointments to meet with adult learners.
• Assisting in the formulation of individual employment and career plans for each adult learner.
• Providing referrals and resources to address barriers to employment.
• Providing support and guidance to help adult learners prepare for job fairs, practice for job interviews, and find employment.
• Conduct workshops on topics of common needs and interests related to employment readiness.
• Developing employment connections and opportunities for adult learners.

Qualifications/Requirements:

• B.A. in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or related fields.
• Bilingual Spanish/English highly desired.
• Experience teaching and counseling adult immigrants.
