Boston Creates, is a City of Boston city-wide initiative to build a plan that will guide development of the arts and culture in the city for the next 10 years. The process was kicked off on April 9th with a press conference by Mayor Walsh and Julie Barros, Chief of Arts + Culture. You can read more about the launch here:http://bit.ly/1JE0bGT
Currently the City is looking for people to get involved in one of 2 ways: Leadership Council and their own neighborhood team. The Leadership Council is an opportunity to identify and convene civic leaders with passion for arts and culture in Boston. These members serve as advisers to the Office of the Mayor on the larger key points of the cultural planning process. They will help to foster dialogues in their community and contribute to the research and approval of the final plan. Team members will be responsible for holding community conversations about the arts, either within their own networks, organizations or in their neighborhood. The team application is available in other languages on the site. We want to make sure these teams are diverse and reflect Boston and its rich neighborhoods. In order to do this, we need your help to get the message out to the community.
The community conversations will be running through the summer and multiple meetings will be held in every community so there will be plenty of opportunities for people to share their ideas for the arts with the City even if the team member role isn’t right for them.
Mayor Walsh applauds White House Task Force on New Americans Report to President Obama.
This past Tuesday, the White House Task Force on New Americans unveiled a report to the President that aims to improve and better coordinate federal strategies that support the successful integration of immigrants into U.S. communities. The City of Boston provided detailed recommendations to the task Force, many of which were highlighted in the report. The recommendations will greatly impact the federal government’s ability to both directly address the linguistic, economic, and civic integration needs of immigrants and refugees, and serve as a resource for state and local governments working to integrate immigrants into their classrooms, workplaces, and communities. Mayor Martin J. Walsh said this about the release:
“The City of Boston is proud to be a city of immigrants, and I am proud to be a son of immigrants. Through the Mayor’s Office of New Bostonians, our City has extensive experience in promoting the integration of our foreign-born residents. Therefore, with the input of multiple City departments, I submitted recommendations to this Task Force focusing on Public Health, K-12 Education, Economic Development & Small Business, and Adult Education & Workforce Training. I am honored that the White House has recognized Boston as a leading City in fostering a welcoming environment so that all members of our communities have opportunities to contribute and thrive.”

DACA/DAPA Free Screening and Document Gathering Workshop on Saturday, May 30, 2015:

Background: We have been working with about 20 community partners, consulates and legal service providers to organize a free screening and document gathering workshop on May 30th in East Boston. This will hopefully be the first of several clinics of this type as we all work to help the immigrant community prepare for the implementation of President Obama’s executive actions. Despite the temporary delay due to the Texas judge’s decision, we are moving forward with encouraging the community to prepare and not to be discouraged.
In order to participate and set up a 1-1 screening session, participants must make an appointment by calling our office’s DACA/DAPA information line at: 617-635-4141.
This is going to be a large clinic so we are still looking for volunteers to help. Volunteers can sign up here. Immigration attorneys who are interested in volunteering, should contact Iris Gomez directly at: [email protected].
