AURORA, Colorado, July 21 (Xinhua) — “I still can’t believe it. It’s still unreal. I can’t believe something just happened so close to our home,” Janelle Janrett told Xinhua, recalling the Aurora theater mass shooting that killed 12 people and injured 58 others early Friday morning.
She was praying at a roadside memorial for the victims of the shooting, one of which was her friend who had been killed.

CAMBRIDGE, MA – A new study of international and U.S. state trends in student achievement growth shows that the United States is squarely in the middle of a group of 49 nations in 4th and 8th grade test score gains in math, reading, and science over the period 1995-2009.

Boston – The American Taekwondo United(ATU) National Taekwondo Championships was held in Atlanta in June 2012. More than 800 contestants from all 50 states competed in this national tournament. Elizabeth Wu, a 13-year-old from Canton, Mass. won two championships in her age group by outperforming her peers. Behind the gold medals, flowers and applause, there were sweat and tears from this talented and stubborn girl. (more…)
On Saturday, July 14, at 8:30 p.m., luminaries of the classical music world and beyond—including Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor, John Williams, Keith Lockhart, Emanuel Ax, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Peter Serkin, Andris Nelsons, and David Zinman gathered to celebrate Tanglewood’s 75th anniversary season with a gala program that also spotlighted the festivals’ three major orchestral forces—the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and the Tanglewood Music Center orchestras, as well as the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

“You need the 入藏函（Letter to Enter Tibet）”, the tour bureau representative told me, after examining my USA passport. I couldn’t believe it. I was on my way to Tibet and was stopping by in Zhengzhou, a city in central China. “Could you double-check?”, I asked earnestly, hoping it was a mis-information on her part. “Before the train enters Tibet, there will be a checkpoint. Everybody who does not have a National ID card（身份证）or Letter to Enter Tibet will be turned back and sent onto the next train that comes back.”

HOUSTON, July 5 — The Houston Rockets agreed to terms with New York Knicks restricted free agent guard Jeremy Lin on Thursday, according to a local newspaper. Unless, the New York Knicks matches Houston’s offer by July 11, Lin will become the next Asian basketball star after Yao Ming in Houston.

Raquel’s most emotional moments seem to be when she’s sitting on an airplane. Seated comfortably (or not so comfortably, depending on the airline) in her own allotted space, this is a time when her mind is her own. It’s a time when her thoughts stir and occur, digest and contest, review and renew. It’s also a time of change, an element in life of which Raquel has quite the penchant for. Whether it was the seven year-old, toothy-grinned kid en route to Vancouver from Bangkok, about to start a new life in the west, or the starry-eyed 18 year-old teenager on her first flight to Boston to begin college, or, most recently, the ambitious but somewhat frightened “young lady” jetting across the world to Beijing – one thing remained constant. These moments of symbolic and physical transition were when she felt most alive. (more…)
The first-ever Dragon Boat Race was held on June 17 in the Wuhan East Lake with participation from Wuhan University (WHU) and Huazhong University of Technology and Science (HUST). More than 44 players from both schools finally made a tie. (more…)
