Boston, MA, August 20, 2014, –- On July 31, 2014, Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC), a 27-year old non-profit organization serving the Asian American community of Greater Boston, closed on $5.3 million of financing for the rehabilitation of Tremont Village, a 20-unit low-income apartment building at the border of Chinatown and Bay Village.

Richard Liang Among Volunteers of the Year Honored at 18th Annual Boston Main Streets Awards
On June 26, 2014, Mayor Martin J. Walsh, together with Department of Neighborhood Development Director Sheila Dillon and emcee Susan Wornick, attended the 18th annual Boston Main Streets Awards. At the event, he presented awards to the Boston Main Streets volunteers and businesses of the year, and highlighted significant new funds from the Boston Main Streets Foundation. Richard Liang and Crown Royal Bakery were honorees for Chinatown Main Street. The ceremony, which took place at the historic Strand Theatre in Dorchester, featured entertainment by the Fiddle Head Theatre’s cast of Aida.

Gov. Patrick Signs Bilingual Ballot Bill into Law in Boston Chinatown

Boston, July 17, 2014, — After years of hearings and persistent pressure by immigrant groups, including many in Boston Chinatown, Gov. Patrick signed the bilingual ballot bill (H. 4089) into law in Boston Chinatown on Tuesday with about 100 people from the community attending this historical ceremony. This law permanently provides for fully bilingual ballots in the City of Boston.

California Must Follow B.C. and Apologize to the Chinese Community

San Fransisco, July 10, 2014, — The legislature of British Columbia, Canada passed motion to apologize to the Chinese community in May 2014 for historical wrongs.
The apology, which was introduced by Premier Christy Clark, aimed to recognize and make amends for 160 historical racist and discriminatory policies imposed in B.C., such as denying Chinese immigrants the right to vote and charging them a head tax to immigrate.

Tufts University Receives Approval to Operate Tuberculosis Research Lab
Boston, June 3, 2014 — Tufts University has received a permit from the Boston Public Health Commission to operate the Arnold 8 Biosafety Laboratory, a new research laboratory that will focus on finding innovative ways to detect, prevent and treat tuberculosis. The 1,700-square-foot Biosafety Level 3 laboratory is located within Tufts School of Medicine’s existing Biomedical Research and Public Health Building at 136 Harrison Avenue.
