April 16, 2013, — The investigation into the Boston Marathon explosions is in full swing. FBI and Boston authorities have revealed preliminary details regarding the explosives. They have also continued to interview witnesses. The twin blasts killed three people – including an 8-year-old boy- and injured 183 others at the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday afternoon.

In an address to the nation, President Barack Obama described the bombings as an act of terror and urged Americans to be vigilant and watch for suspicious activity. Quentin Vigne has the details.

A famed sporting event turns into a tragedy. The first explosion went off near the finish line, about three hours after the first runner crossed the line. Another thunderous blast was heard a few seconds later 50 to 100 meters away.

US president Barack Obama said that the bombings were an “act of terrorism” and those who were responsible would be held accountable.

Barack Obama, US President, said, “This was a heinous and cowardly act, and given what we now know about what took place, the FBI is investigating it as an act of terrorism. Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror. What we don’t yet know, however, is who carried out this attack, or why; whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organization, foreign or domestic, or was it the act of a malevolent individual. That’s what we don’t yet know.”

The Boston Police Department is dealing with one of the most complex crime scenes in its history. Investigators have gone over the 12 block crime scene and fanned out to interview witnesses. The FBI has appealed to the public to share cell phone images and videos that could help with the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Governor has ruled out earlier reports that two other unexploded devices had been found.

Deval Patrick, Massachusetts Governor, said, “It’s important to clarify that two and only two explosive devices were found yesterday. Other parcels, all other parcels in the area of the blast, have been examined but there are a no unexploded bombs. There were no unexploded explosive devices found.”

A US federal law enforcement source said one of the bombs appeared to have been placed in a metal pressure cooker, and was hidden in a backpack.

The FBI has said that there were no known additional threats. But Boston authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant in coming days, and to help the FBI with their investigation.

On Tuesday morning, a minute’s silence was held ahead of the opening bell at the New York stock exchange, for the three people killed in the attack.
