Lexington, Mass., March 14, 2016, — Since its call for donations last month, the Chinese Association of Lexington (CAAL) has received over $12,500 for Peter Liang Legal Fund. CALL will deliver the donation as soon as possible according to an email by Hua Wang of CAAL.
On Feb. 20, 2016, over 100,000 protesters in more than 40 major cities across the U.S. and Canada rallied for justice of ex-NYPD officer Peter Liang. These cities include New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Denver, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Miami and Calgary, Canada among others. These peaceful protects were among the largest rallies in the Asian American communities.
CAAL’s Open Letter Calling for Donation
We have all heard about the tragic accident involving New York Police Office Peter Liang, the harsh indictment, and the conviction. In light of the new development of the case and the overwhelming support people have expressed for Officer Peter Liang, the Executive Committee of Chinese American Association of Lexington (CAAL) has decided that CAAL will lead the efforts and organize a local drive open to all Lexington residents and beyond.
Specifically for now, we will do the following:
1. CAAL will collect donations to Peter Liang, hold the fund, and deliver to an organization or a legal trust that will act on behalf of Peter Liang. We don’t recommend sending donations to the current bank account that is under the name of Peter Liang and controlled by Peter Liang directly due to legal and trust issues.
2. Donation checks can be made out to “Lexington for Peter Liang” and mailed to: CAAL, P. O. Box 453, Lexington, MA 02420. Donation can also be made via PayPal by sending money to [email protected]. Note, donations for this purpose, although via CAAL, are not tax deductible.
3. We will help organize the letter writing campaign to the judge to ask for lesser sentence.
4. We will help organize the Lexington people to go to Sat 2/20/16 rally at Boston Common from 11am – 2pm.
CAAL will reserve the right to take additional steps as we receive further input or deem necessary.
Thank you.
CAAL
