Boston, July 20, 2016, — Thomas B.C. Shen of Lexington, MA passed away on June 15, 2016. A retired Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, he battled Parkinson’s Disease for many years.
Born in China, and a survivor of the second Sino-Japanese war, Thomas’ family were political refugees who fled to Taiwan in the 1940’s. After graduating National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, Thomas received a scholarship to the U.S.A. for his Masters studies at Brown University. He received his PhD in applied physics from Harvard University.
Thomas loved music and singing. A brilliant mind and a beyond generous heart, Thomas is survived by wife Stella K.C. Shen (Han), son Howard Ignatius Shen and his wife Sarita Chung of Brookline, daughter Irene HongPing Shen and her partner Michael Andrade Lalan of Brooklyn, NY; three grandchildren: Renata, Calder and Archer; and siblings: Jane Shen Ting, Oliver Shen, Nancy Yee, Robert Shen, Alice Chen, and Annie Kung; and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday June 22, 2016 at Saint Brigid’s Church, 2001 Mass. Ave. Lexington at 12pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visitation at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd. Lexington Wednesday prior to the Mass from 10 AM to 11:30 AM.
