  • Dong Wenhua and Me, A Performance to Remember

    By Franke Presta, Northeastern University

My last performance at the NEU&MIT Spring Festival Gala went very well. After the event, I met with several people who were interested in why I was able to speak and sing in fluent Cantonese. This happens after most of my performances, so I didn’t think much of it. I answered their questions, posed for pictures, and gave out my business cards as I usually do.

  • For Two Students, Running Boston Marathon Is the Best Lesson

    By David Li, bostonese.com

Boston, April 28, 2014, — For the 36,000 runners of the 118th Boston Marathon, many of them returned to the race to finish it when two bombs interrupted last year’s Boston Marathon, such as Boston College student Yanyi Weng. For first-time runner Boston University graduate student Baiyun Yao, she trained hard for marathon in honor of Lingzi Lu. A beautiful sunny day with low humility certainly helped both of them finish the 26.2 mile course and cross finish line with pride on April 21, Patriots’ Day of 2014.

  • University of Utah Offers World Class Entrepreneurship Program

By Chunlin Wang, University of Utah

Several weeks ago I came across an online article (in Chinese) titled “Reflection on the Career Path of a Chinese American Woman as a Graduate of MIT”. The lady was No. 1 in her middle school and high school and a top student at MIT. When she graduated from MIT, Google as a small startup tried hard to recruit her. Despite the persuasion of her classmates, she decided to join a blue-chip firm, because doing so seemed much secure for her future. In contrast, some of her classmates who were not as good as her in study later became very successful on career after founding or joining promising startups. Now she regrets about the choice she made. This article was so interesting that it prodded me to think about related issues. Here I would like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts with you, hoping that they will helpful to your study. • Statement Explains Why SCA-5 Was Sent back to the CA Senate Today

SACRAMENTO, March 17, 2014 -—Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) and Senator Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina) released a joint statement regarding the return of Senate Constitutional Amendment No. 5 to its house of origin at the request of the author, and the creation of a bicameral commission on issues surrounding recruitment, admissions, and retention in California’s systems of higher education:

“The overwhelming majority of the Legislature in both houses believes that we have an obligation to provide the broadest access to our three higher education institutions: community colleges, CSUs and UCs. We will be convening a bicameral commission to further this important conversation. Our expectation is that this Commission will engage students, faculty, administration, parents and community leaders in an ongoing discussion about ways to ensure that our campuses can recruit, admit and retain student bodies that reflect all of California. This is a crucial issue for California and this is a conversation we need to have now. Our campuses should be given the tools they need to prepare all segments of our society to succeed in the 21st century economy.

  • BayHelix Releases Statement “Vehemently Opposing” SCA-5

Decades ago, many of our members came to the United States attracted by the belief that this is the land where “all men are created equal” and her citizens and residents are endowed with certain unalienable rights including the rights to “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” At that time, we were fortunately given the equal opportunity for education and career advancement, not because of our skin color or race, but because of our merit and character. We are now contributing members in the society, many in the State of California, as hard-working, tax-paying, and law-abiding citizens. We share these values with our children while creating new opportunities and jobs to others.
