ABE Reading Teacher, part-time
The Community Learning Center is looking for a teacher(s) for several Reading/Writing classes starting in September. Morning and/or evening Intermediate (GLE 4-5.9), pre-ASE (GLE 6-8.9) and ASE (GLE 9 -12) level classes may be available. Classes meet either 2 or 3 times per week. The teacher is responsible for teaching classes, writing lesson plans, developing instructional materials and maintaining records of student participation. Experience teaching ABE/ASE reading and writing is required. This is an hourly position at a rate of $24.60 per hour, with 1 hour preparation per 1.5 hour class. Transition to College Instructor

GENERAL DESCRIPTION                

Reporting to the ABE Program Manager and Learn at Work Coordinator the Transition to College Instructor works with Adult Basic Education staff and students to create a learner-centered environment that is conducive to achievement and student empowerment. This is a fulltime position (35 hours per week, M-F, 9 am-5 pm) including prep time and meeting time. Transition to College Instructor provides pre-College Math, ELA, Writing, and College and Career Readiness instruction to adults. Duties include planning lessons, monitoring and assessing student progress on an ongoing basis, creating Individual Learning Plans with students, coordinating with Educational Counselor/Intake Coordinator, and collecting, recording, and reporting all necessary information related to students in a timely manner. Classes meet Monday – Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.  

QUALIFICATIONS

1.            BA in Education preferred Master Degree in Education or other relevant field, or equivalent experience.
2.            Two years of related experience teaching pre college/college level to adult learners from diverse backgrounds.
3.            Ability to work as part of a team.
4.            Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
5.            Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of the team.
6.            Some knowledge of the ACCUPLACER exam.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1.            Teach pre college Math, ELA, Writing, and College and Career readiness  material  to participants in accordance with program schedule.
2.            Create and develop curriculum, lesson plans, teaching materials, and individual learning plans (ILPs) to aid students in developing skills and confidence in Pre-College subject areas.
3.            Integrate computer-aided instruction into lessons as appropriate.
4.            Compile and submit curriculum reports as required.
5.            Monitor and assess students’ progress on a regular basis; and inform the Director of Workforce Readiness and/or Education Counselor of changes in participants’ status.
6.            Assist with outreach, recruitment, assessment, and placement of students as needed.
7.            Provide guidance and support to volunteer tutors and student interns as needed.
8.            Pursue opportunities for professional growth.
9.            Work collaboratively with Adult Basic Education and Technology Education team members to ensure performance goals are met.
10.          Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, team-based projects, in-service trainings, and cross-functional contract teams.
11.          Work closely with members of other functional area teams to ensure participants’ needs are being met.
12.          Performs other related duties as requested.
13.          Responsible for entering the data into ETO system.

ESOL Level 2 Teacher

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the ABE Program Manager and Learn at Work Coordinator, the ESOL Teacher provides English language instruction and workplace English instruction within the ESOL Program and South End Community Health Center. Duties include planning lessons, monitoring, and assessing student progress on an ongoing basis; participating in the intake process as requested; creating Individual Learning Plans with students; and collecting, recording, and reporting all necessary information related to students in a timely manner.

This is a 30 hours per week, position for 10 months, T-F from 9am-5pm. Classes meet Tuesday -Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. 

QUALIFICATIONS
1.            Master’s degree in TESOL, Education, or other relevant field, or equivalent experience; and, a minimum of three years teaching, preferably in a Department of Education funded adult basic education program
2.            Knowledge of the challenges immigrants experience
3.            Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, writing, and curriculum development skills are required
4.            Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer)
5.            Knowledge of SMARTT a plus
6.            Ability to work as part of a team
7.            Demonstrated ability to work independently
8.            Best Plus and TABE E certified preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES
1.            Teach language skills to limited English-speaking adults in accordance with program schedule
2.            Create and develop curriculum including workplace-focused curriculum, placement tests, lesson plans, teaching materials, and individual learning plans (ILPs) to aid students in developing skills and confidence in using oral and written English
3.            Integrate computer-aided instruction into lessons as appropriate
4.            Compile and submit lesson plans integrating MA DESE curriculum frameworks
5.            Monitor and assess students’ progress on a regular basis; informing Director of Workforce Readiness and/or Program Coordinator and/or staff at South End Community Health Center (SECHC) and/or Educational counselor and/or Transition to College Advisor of changes in participants’ status
6.            Maintain all necessary files and records
7.            Assist with outreach, recruitment, assessment, and placement of students as needed
8.            Administer and score placement tests as needed
9.            Help to set students’ goals and follows-up on goal attainment with program counselor
10.          Provide guidance and support to volunteer tutors and student interns as needed
11.          Pursue opportunities for professional growth
12.          Prepare ESOL students for the next steps by integrating career and college readiness into curriculum
13.          Perform other related duties as requested
14.          Participate in meetings, in-service training, and committees
15.          Actively participate in interagency planning to assure the participants’ needs are being effectively addressed

THE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT IS SEEKING AN EVENING PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR TO JOIN ITS EDUCATION TEAM!
JOB TITLE:       ESOL Teacher (Evening Program – T, W, TH)

Part-time: 15.5 hours per week (9 teaching hours, 4.5 prep hours and 1 meeting hour)

REPORTS TO: Evening Program Manager and Director of Workforce Development

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Provide ESOL instruction to students enrolled in the ESOL classes, three evenings per week, 36 weeks per year.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist in the initial assessment and placement of students into appropriate levels.
• Maintain attendance records and reports, as required. Contribute to the overall retention of students in assigned class.
• Plan a course of instruction appropriate to assigned class level according to ESOL curriculum guidelines and students’ needs and prepare all classroom materials.
• Contribute to the on-going curriculum development process. Review and adopt new materials as needed.
• Work closely with students to set and achieve goals focused on these areas: family, career, and education.
• Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations and changes accordingly.
• Refer student and classroom issues/needs to the Evening Program Manager.
• Attend regularly scheduled program meetings and periodic professional training sessions. DESE requires 12 hours of professional development per year.
• Ensure compliance with DESE guidelines.
• Perform other related duties as needed.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Function independently with broad scope of established departmental policies and practices, generally referring specific issues, to the Evening Program Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field required, related MA preferred. Ability to model accurate American English pronunciation and grammar required.

At least one year of adult ESOL teaching experience preferably with immigrant populations; experience with non-literate learners is helpful.

This position is dependent upon funding obtained through year-to-year grants and contracts.  Loss of funding may impact the continuation of the position in any given year.
