Chinese Americans Are Urged to Vote Today

Nov. 1, 2012

My Fellow Chinese Americans,

The 2012 election offers us an opportunity to exercise our sacred right to vote. As the first Chinese American woman to serve in the U.S. Congress and as someone who has served in elected office for over 20 years, I know how important it is to vote. And as proud American citizens, I urge you to vote on November 6th and ensure that our voices are heard.

As Chinese Americans, we must never take this proud civic and political tradition for granted. 130 years ago, the U.S. Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which deprived those of Chinese descent from gaining American citizenship or ever having the right to vote. Together with the help of community leaders from across the country, I launched an effort to urge the U.S. Congress to apologize for this notorious Act. In 2011 and 2012, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives both unanimously expressed their profound regret about the Exclusion law, a historic moment in our country’s fight for justice and a more perfect Union. As a community, we must always remember the journey that we have taken to come this far, and we must never forget what happened in 1882!

Now our country is going through a tumultuous period of time, and what happens in this election will affect the future of our country and the future of the world. Asian Americans are now the fastest growing community in the United States, and we are uniquely positioned to have a profound impact on the 2012 elections. But that only happens if you choose to vote. Now is our chance to honor our forbearers who never had the voting privileges that we enjoy today. Now is our chance to shape our nation’s future and build a better world for the next generation.

Help me spread this message. Let us all vote on November 6!

Judy May Chu
U.S. Representative for California’s 32nd congressional district
